Charles "Lee" Matthews, Employment and Community First CHOICES (ECF CHOICES) Member

"I like my home. I have lots of people in my life. I am becoming more independent,“ says Charles "Lee" Matthews. Lee has experienced a significant transformation since being a member of the Employment and Community First (ECF) CHOICES program and receiving Community Living Supports (CLS).

Living in Knoxville, Tennessee, Lee faced a variety of challenges, including behavioral issues. He enrolled in ECF CHOICES in February 2023 following multiple hospitalizations stemming from behaviors at home. Lee transitioned to CLS Family Model housing, where he also receives applied behavior analysis (ABA) services. This service has greatly aided his progress and improved Charles’ social skills.

Utilizing enabling technology through the ECF CHOICES program has increased his community integration and independence. This includes tools to assist with toileting, which have enhanced his independence and autonomy. The care home staff also introduced flashcards to teach facial expressions, leading to improved emotional understanding and increased positive social interactions. Additionally, to communicate and learn his daily schedule, a whiteboard featuring a weekly plan and tactile markers for special events was implemented. Since moving into CLS housing, Lee has not had any behavioral events leading to hospitalization, which were previously frequent. Thanks to the support from Community Living Supports, Lee has successfully integrated into the community and is living a more independent life.

As part of ECF CHOICES Group 6, Lee enjoys greater freedom in daily activities, such as managing appointments and household chores. “It is relaxing at my home. I have freedom to move around my house. My group family makes sure I get to all my appointments (doctor, dentist, barber),” Lee explains. He receives assistance with laundry and has taken on the responsibility of filling two bird feeders regularly. Additionally, he enjoys relaxing with roommates and watching television shows.

Lee's journey demonstrates how ECF CHOICES and Community Living Supports empower individuals to live independently and integrate fully into their communities. With determination and support, Charles "Lee" Matthews has achieved personal goals and is living life on his terms.
