Pollution Prevention (P2) Program
The Pollution Prevention Program empowers manufacturers to achieve their sustainability goals.
TDEC’s Pollution Prevention (P2) program* offers resources to help Tennessee manufacturers achieve their sustainability and pollution prevention goals. This not only helps to conserve the natural beauty of Tennessee but also saves money and supports long-term success.
In general terms, “pollution prevention” means reducing, eliminating, or preventing pollution at its source. Our P2 program is designed to help reduce the use of natural resources, lower costs for producers, and prevent pollution before it happens. We work with manufacturers to find smarter, more efficient ways to operate.
In addition to assisting manufacturers, the P2 program supports the Tennessee Sustainable Spirits (TNSS) program. This program provides technical resources specific to spirits producers, such as wineries, wine growers, breweries, and distilleries, for their commitment to sustainability and pollution prevention goals.
*This program is partially funded by a U.S. EPA pollution prevention grant.
Pollution Prevention Examples
- Modifying a production process to generate less waste.
- Implementing water and energy conservation practices.
- Reusing materials such as drums and pallets rather than disposing of them as waste.
- Using non-toxic or less toxic chemicals as cleaners, degreasers, and other maintenance chemicals.
How Our P2 Program Helps Manufacturers
- Conducts in-person technical assistance site visits to help identify opportunities for pollution prevention at manufacturing facilities.
- Hosts webinars and workshops led by industry experts for manufacturers and spirits producers.
- Organizes open discussions for manufacturers to share successes and challenges with manufacturing peers on P2 topics.
- Distributes electronic newsletters featuring timely topics and relevant industry updates.
- And more!
