Kayln Wheelock, Employment and Community First CHOICES (ECF CHOICES) Member

“ECF is a great program. My life has really changed,” Kayln Wheelock details. “I know now that people can accept me and love me for who I am. They will keep me on the right path to increase my quality of life as well as my independence which is very important to me.”

Kayln has experienced a significant transformation with support from the Employment and Community First (ECF) CHOICES program and Community Living Supports (CLS).

Kayln initially joined ECF CHOICES in December 2018 while residing at home with her mother. She has autism, an intellectual disability, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and bi-polar disorder, as well as a history of challenging behaviors. Due to escalating behavioral challenges, she transitioned to Group 6, and later transitioned from her mother’s home to Community Living Supports. These varied supports help members live independently and fully participate in community life. Reflecting on her experience in Community Living Supports, Kayln notes, “Living in CLS has helped increase my self-esteem by learning healthier eating habits and exercising. My Family Model Provider (FMP) encourages me to think outside of the box and be creative. She has helped me improve my shopping and budgeting skills.”

Thanks to the supports she has received in ECF CHOICES, Kayln has thrived with a range of behavioral health supports including applied behavior analysis (ABA), intensive outpatient programs (IOP), and crisis stabilization services. These diverse services have supported her progress and improved her social skills. Kayln says, “I have learned how to advocate for myself to be more independent.” She has formed new friendships, adopted a healthier lifestyle with regular neighborhood walks, handles her laundry independently, and volunteers at the Cat Café 2-3 times monthly. She actively engages in community activities, including enjoying vacations with her FMP and family!
